The apes rise (and tackle helicopters) in the first trailer!

It’s difficult to say who the target audience is for Fox’s latest franchise reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Is it a prequel to the ageing series which started in 1968, or an off-shoot of Tim Burton’s hilarious and misjudged remake? The debut trailer fails to provide an answer, although why the film exists at all is perhaps a more pertinent question.

James Franco – who you’d expect to be above such drivel post-127 Hours - stars as a scientist who unwittingly dooms us all when his experiments transform primates into hyper-intelligent killing machines. In the grand tradition of this series it all looks ridiculous, but at least Brian Cox is on hand to give this cheese some class. The film opens in the US on August 5th.
