Martin Riggs, Jack Bauer and the Punisher plan a heist

Hey, Mel Gibson! Welcome back from the wilderness!

After the media meltdown that was Charlie Sheen, and the private embarrassment that was Arnold Schwarzenegger, it appears that former punching-bag Mel is finally being allowed to headline a blockbuster or two. A part of me wants him to succeed, while the other half is still disgusted at those racist rants. And while I’ll never view the Lethal Weapon movies in the same way again, I’d be wrong to deny his talent as an actor. The recent Edge of Darkness wasn’t a great film, but his mere presence elevated it to compelling entertainment.

The news that he’s returning to genre cinema isn’t entirely unwelcome. Joining him, is Kiefer Sutherland and Thomas Jane. That’s a very (white) powerhouse cast right there. The film is Sleight of Hand, about “a bunch of bungling burglars in Paris who inadvertently steal a rare gold coin belonging to a gangster.” It’s not exactly original, but that ensemble (which includes Gerard Depardieu) makes this must-see material. At the helm, is the relatively unknown Brad Mirman.

There’s currently no projected release date, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted on this one. Oh, and Gibson’s Oscar-bait oddity The Beaver is finally released in the US this week. Hard to believe it’s actually real.
