The Expendables 2 finds a director

Ah, Con Air. What a delicious mound of movie cheese. If we were to make a list of guilty pleasures, it would be near the top. Not even Nicolas Cage with that atrocious wig and accent could sully the film, which became a genre classic thanks to an epic ensemble cast. Which might explain why director Simon West has been tapped to helm The Expendables 2.

Sylvester Stallone will pass the megaphone duties to West and concentrate squarely on his “performance”, a wise call considering the first film failed to live up to expectations. A bigger budget and a more visual filmmaker could be just what this men-on-a-mission franchise needs. While West made the truly abysmal Tomb Raider, his recent remake of The Mechanic with Jason Statham was a solid old school actioner.

The official, spoilery synopsis:

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They’re not the only ones who want blood. Tool’s beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity.

Stallone and his motley crew will kick ass and take names August 17th 2012.
