Will The Amazing Spider-Man live up to its title?

Until a proper trailer lands, the jury is still out on The Amazing Spider-Man. Sony are hitting the refresh button on their wildly successful franchise, taking the character back to square one with a high school-set origin story. It’s enough to make you wish Marvel Studios had the rights.

An avalanche of new stills landed at EW, including a clearer look at the costume, which is starting to grow on me. It has an old-fashioned, faithful style with a homemade quality that is appropriate for a geek with no money. In other words, it just screams Peter Parker.

I’m just not sure Andrew Garfield is the right fit for the part. Tobey Maguire had his detractors but he was a convincing nerd. Garfield looks like a movie star, so trying to buy him as a socially inept chemistry buff might be a little hard. But I’m trying to be optimistic.

There’s no flies on Emma Stone. She’s gorgeous and immensely likeable, with a natural screen presence that is ideally suited to Gwen Stacy. Replacing Mary Jane was certainly the way to go. Garfield will also be joined by Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Sally Field as Aunt May and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard.

The Amazing Spider-Man will swing into cinemas 3rd July, 2012.  Head over to EW to see the full gallery.
